Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies

New Programme | Parenting Courses

The Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies (CPS) announces the launch of a new Parenting Courses programme, with a psychoanalytic and developmental orientation.

Parenting is not a set of techniques, nor are there ready-made formulas that can be applied in the same way to every child. The aim of the courses is to help parents develop a deeper understanding of the child's inner world, their emotional development, and the relationship that forms between the child and those who care for them.

The courses will address, among other topics, early emotional development, attachment and separation, boundaries, anger and aggression, childhood fears, jealousy, self-esteem, sibling relationships, adolescence, and the development of autonomy. Particular attention will also be given to the ways in which parents' own personal histories and childhood experiences may influence their relationship with their child.

The Parenting Courses take place in a small group, with a maximum of eight (8) participants. The limited group size allows for active participation, discussion, and exploration of the topics presented, while maintaining the educational character of the programme.

Sessions are held once a week, from October to the end of June. This duration allows the themes of parenting and child psychological development to be approached gradually and with continuity throughout the academic year.

The Parenting Courses are open to parents of children and adolescents, as well as to individuals who are expecting to become parents. No prior knowledge of psychology or psychoanalytic theory is required.

The programme is educational and informational in nature and does not constitute psychotherapy or individualised clinical assessment.

Expression of Interest for Participation in a Psychoanalytic Therapy Group

The Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies (CPS) announces that it will be accepting expressions of interest for participation in a psychoanalytic therapy group from 1 to 15 September 2026.

Participation begins with an individual assessment meeting conducted by Michalis Paterakis, Founder & Director of the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies (CPS). The purpose of this assessment is to explore and understand the individual's therapeutic concerns and to determine whether psychoanalytic group psychotherapy represents the most appropriate therapeutic intervention. Where group treatment is considered clinically appropriate, the possibility of joining one of the existing psychoanalytic therapy groups at CPS is subsequently considered, taking into account each group's composition, stage of development, and therapeutic dynamics. Admission to a group is granted only following clinical assessment.

Application period: 1–15 September

For individuals living outside Athens, in remote areas of Greece, or abroad, the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies (CPS) also offers participation in an online psychoanalytic therapy group. The online group operates within the same stable therapeutic framework and is conducted according to the same therapeutic principles as the in-person groups.

About the Psychoanalytic Therapy Group

A psychoanalytic therapy group is a form of psychotherapy in which a small group of individuals meets on a regular weekly basis under the guidance of a trained psychoanalytic therapist. Within a safe and stable therapeutic setting, the relationships that develop among group members become the focus of exploration and understanding, creating opportunities for personal growth and psychological development.

The aim of the psychoanalytic group is not merely the relief of symptoms, but, more importantly, the development of a deeper understanding of oneself, unconscious conflicts, recurring interpersonal patterns, and the ways in which these shape emotional life, personal choices, and overall psychological functioning.

The group functions as a living therapeutic environment in which each member has the opportunity to observe and understand, in real time, the way they relate to others. Through this process, aspects of the self that often remain outside conscious awareness gradually become accessible, allowing long-established relational patterns to be worked through and fostering greater psychological freedom, emotional maturity, and more authentic ways of relating to others.

The therapy groups at the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies (CPS) are organised with careful consideration of participants' age, therapeutic needs, and stage of psychological development. Some groups are intended for individuals beginning psychoanalytic therapy for the first time, while others are designed for those who already have previous experience of individual or group psychoanalytic psychotherapy and wish to continue their analytic work at a more advanced level.

The psychoanalytic therapy groups at the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies (CPS) are long-term, meet on a weekly basis, and are conducted within a stable therapeutic framework founded upon the principles of confidentiality, mutual respect, and responsible participation by all members.
